Why Trust Me?
You are probably thinking now why should I trust you. And that is a good question. I probably would have the same question if I was scouring the word wide web trying to find reliable info.
Here is the thing. Well I may not have all the answers, what I do have is years of experience asking questions. That has led me to complete three different yoga teacher trainings as well as just as many meditation courses as well as with sitting with real life meditation masters across the world, here in the US, as well as in India, Bali and Thailand.
I have been studying meditation and yoga for 15 years and have spent nearly half of those years, as a student living in meditation retreats and monasteries both in retreat Himalayas and in the proverbial concrete jungle. Out of respect for my teachers I will not name them here, but they their lives are the light by which I live. So while I hold no authority in saying what is what, I do have some understanding of what is what.
What Does A Meditation Teacher Do?
A simple definition would be – a meditation teacher is an individual who instructs and guides others in practicing the art of meditation.
The primary role of is to help students learn and develop a consistent meditation practice. This includes providing instruction on different meditation techniques and guiding students. The teacher will also help students understand how to deepen in the practice so that it can help improve their overall quality of life, whether thats by increasing efficiency or decreasing their levels of stress.
In addition to teaching meditation techniques, a teacher may offer advice on how to incorporate the practice into their life with issues ranging from
- Struggling with the technique
- Difficulty in concentrating
- Maintaining a consistent practice
- Lack of motivation
- Confused states of mind that arise
- Change in personal habits as meditation progresses
These are just some of the things you can work on with clients. There are a host of other benefits, as you shall see as well.
Why Become A Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher?
Mindfulness meditation has become increasingly popular in recent years, with many individuals seeking to incorporate it into their daily lives and as a result there has been a three fold increase in the last five years. With that massive growth there has also been a growing demand for certified mindfulness teachers.
Here are some reasons why becoming a teacher can rewarding:
1. Develop a Deep Understanding of Mindfulness Meditation
Becoming a teacher requires a certain passion, without which you likely will not find the energy or interest needed to keep at it when things are tough. Just like anything that we find interesting, the more we learn the deeper we go both in theory and in practice.
2. Help Others Cultivate Mindfulness
Its no secret that helping others is a big part of finding meaning and significance. Stepping outside your immediate wants and needs encourages empathy. When are ego is in check we are more able to do what is good for the whole, rather than just ourselves.
3. Expand Your Career Opportunities
Certification as a mindfulness meditation teacher can open up different career opportunities. This can include working at wellness centers, yoga studios, teaching groups in a corporate setting, as well as private one-on-one teaching and coaching.
4. Build a Rewarding and Flexible Career
Designing your teaching schedule to your calendar enables you to create a career that aligns with your day. You are no longer tied to a corporate job filled with rigid hours, but can create something that is for you.
5. Personal Growth and Self-Discovery
As you guide others you will deepen in your understanding. We often learn more when we teach others. When we have to verbalize and communicate our knowledge with others we activate different parts of the brain that makes that understanding active rather than passive.
These 5 benefits are just a few of the things that make going down this path rewarding. Let’s see what else is there.
What Is A Meditation Coach?
Often times this question, ‘What Is A Meditation Coach?’ is asked and for good reason. It is hard to understand the difference. And while there is a subtle difference, the two terms, meditation coach and meditation teacher is often used interchangeably. With that said, some people do make a distinction.
A meditation coach is an individual who specializes in providing guidance, support, and motivation to individuals who are seeking to develop a meditation practice.
While a meditation teacher may focus on instructing students on the techniques and principles of meditation.
Is there a difference? Well, a meditation coach takes a more hands-on approach, more as an advisor rather than an instructor.
A meditation coach works with clients in an intimate personal space. While they may guide students through different meditation techniques, such as breathwork, visualization, or mantra meditation, they are more concerned with helping people have a direction in life, overcome specific challenges, or as a quasi-psycho therapist.
In addition to providing instruction and guidance, a meditation coach may offer support and accountability with a personal touch. This can include regular check-ins to discuss progress and challenges and provide encouragement and motivation to help clients stay on track.
What Is The Difference Between A Mindfulness Coach And A Meditation Teacher?
While mindfulness coaches and meditation teachers share some similarities as we said, there are a few other differences worth mentioning. Here are some key differences:
Approach and Techniques
Meditation teachers typically focus on teaching specific meditation techniques and guiding students through the practice. The primary goal – to help students develop a consistent meditation practice.
On the other hand, mindfulness coaches may use various practices to help clients cultivate greater awareness and presence. The focus is assisting clients in developing a greater sense of mindfulness and clarity, which can include not just meditation techniques but other wellness and lifestyle routines including yoga, and other contemplative practices. They may also use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches to help clients overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Clientele
Meditation teachers may work with a wide range of students, including beginners as well as more experienced meditators, and may teach in group settings or offer private instruction. They may also work in various locations, such as yoga studios, wellness centers, or corporate environments.
Mindfulness coaches on the other hand might work with clients who are more looking to alleviate their stress, anxiety, or directionless perspective in their personal or professional lives.
While there are some similarities between mindfulness coaches and meditation teachers, the two roles differ in their focus, approach, and clientele.
Who Is A Meditation Teacher Training For?
A teacher training can be a good option for anyone interested in deepening their meditation practice as well as theoretic understanding as well as for anyone that wants to be able to more effectively communicate the practice to others.
There are two key factors to consider when deciding if meditation teacher training is right for you:
- What Are Your Personal Goals And Intentions?
Before enrolling in a meditation teacher training program consider your personal goals and intentions. Are you interested in deepening your meditation practice, or are you hoping to learn how to teach meditation to others, or are you just wanting to change career paths? While there is no right answer, understanding your motivations can help you select a program aligned with what you are looking for.
- What Are You Hoping To Achieve?
Depending on your goals and what you are hoping to get out of the course, you can consider a program that offers something that is aligned with those goals. Some courses focus their modules on theory and techniques whiles others focus on philosophy or business.
How To Become A Meditation Teacher?
There is no one way to become a meditation teacher. There are many ways to skin a cat (or so the saying goes). However, by developing your personal practice, attending a teacher training course, gaining teaching experience and building a network you will be well on your way.
Here are 5 steps you can take.
1. Develop a consistent meditation practice
Before you can teach meditation to others, developing a consistent meditation practice for yourself is the only way to go. This should be self explanatory. Be a master yourself before you teach others. You have to have experienced it yourself before you are able to authentically relate it to others.
2. Attend a meditation teacher training program
There are many meditation teacher training programs available, both online and in-person. Look for a program accredited by a reputable organization offering in-depth instruction on meditation theory, practice, and teaching techniques.
While certification is not required to teach meditation, it can be a valuable credential demonstrating your commitment to the field.
3. Gain teaching experience
Once you have completed a teacher training, gaining experience teaching is the next logical step. Consider offering meditation classes to friends and family or volunteering to teach at a local community center or yoga studio. This will allow you to develop your teaching skills and gain feedback that you can use to refine your skillset.
4. Build a network
Networking is vital in any field, and teaching is no exception. Attend events and workshops, connect with other teachers and practitioners, and consider joining a professional organization such as the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. There are loads of ways that you can market yourself online. More on this on another post.
Accreditation & Certification
There are two main accrediting bodies for meditation certification.
- International Mindfulness and Meditation Alliance (IMMA)
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
The International Mindfulness and Meditation Alliance (IMMA) is an international association that certifies and supports meditation and mindfulness teachers and training.
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the leading independent accreditation institution operating across the industry to review and accredit professional institutes and academic bodies.
The accreditation and certification provided by these two bodies being a recognized accreditation that is respected worldwide may be helpful when looking into programs. Once you have completed the training, you will receive a formal certificate indicating that you are a certified meditation and mindfulness teacher. Not that these certifications are the be all and end all – but can help when looking for jobs in the future.

Things they could improve: The program is relatively expensive compared to other similar certifications in the market. Since the program is self-paced, there is limited interaction with other students. This may make it difficult for students to connect with like-minded individuals and form a community.
While the program covers much theoretical information, more practical experience must be gained. This may make it challenging for students to apply the knowledge they have gained in real-life situations.
What I like: The Spiritual Wellness Specialist + Meditation & Mindfulness Instructor Certification program covers a wide range of spiritual wellness and mindfulness topics. It provides a holistic approach to these practices

However, not all certification programs are created equal. If you are considering enrolling in a meditation certification program, here are some key things to look for in a curriculum.
Accreditation: Accreditation means that the program has met specific standards set by an accrediting body, which can assure that the program is of high quality. Accreditation can also help, but not always necessary, if you plan to teach professionally.
Style of Meditation: There are many different styles or meditation techniques. Some common types of meditation include mindfulness meditation, Transcendental Meditation, Vipassana meditation, and Loving-Kindness meditation. Its good to get a grasp of a few different styles so that you can both teach to others and find something that works for you.
Duration and Format: Meditation certification programs can range from a few weeks to several months and can be offered in person or online. Consider your schedule and availability when choosing a program and your learning preferences. If you prefer hands-on learning, an in-person program may suit you, whereas an online program may be a better fit if you choose to learn at your own pace.
Course Modules: Look for a program that offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of topics such as history of meditation, philosophy of meditation, as well as the science behind meditation. You should also look for a program that offer practical training in teaching as well as modules that will help you build a business or meditation program.
Faculty: Look for a program conducted by experienced meditation teachers who deeply understand the practice and can provide valuable insights and guidance. Check the credentials of the faculty, as well as their teaching experience and reputation in the meditation community.
Requirements: Some programs may require a certain number of hours of practice or teaching experience before you can be certified. Others may require that you pass a written or practical exam. Make sure you understand the requirements before enrolling in the program.
Support and Resources: A certification program ideally should offer ongoing support and resources to help you continue your practice and continue learning as a teacher. Look for a program that provides access to a community of meditation teachers and practitioners and resources such as teaching materials and continuing education opportunities.
Cost: Finally, consider the cost of the program. Meditation certification programs can vary widely in price. A high-quality program may be more expensive, but it may also provide a better value regarding the quality of education and resources provided.
