Embarking on the path of becoming a yoga teacher has been a transformative journey, one that has not only deepened my own practice but has also allowed me to guide others on their unique paths to wellness.
In this blog post, I want to share the intimate details of my personal odyssey—from the first encounter with yoga to the profound decision to become a yoga teacher, the rigorous training that followed, the joys and challenges of teaching, the invaluable lessons learned, and finally, some recommendations for those aspiring to tread this sacred path.
How I Was Introduced to Yoga
My journey into the world of yoga began as a quest for balance and tranquillity in the chaos of modern life. I vividly remember the first time I unrolled my mat, surrounded by a room filled with the gentle hum of breath and the soft rustling of leaves outside the studio window.
From the very first asana, I felt a connection to my body and breath that I had never experienced before. It was like discovering a hidden language, a silent conversation between my mind, body, and soul. On the other hand – that first class showed me that, even though I was fit, I was by no means mobile or strong. The competitive side of me looked in awe at my yoga teacher, and I thought, “I refuse to struggle like this! One day, I’m going to bend like that.”
What Made Me Decide to Become a Yoga Teacher
Apart from my egoic need to be as mobile and flexible as my yoga teachers – the decision to become a yoga teacher was a gradual revelation, an organic evolution of my practice. As I delved deeper into yoga, I realized its transformative power not only on a physical level but also on a mental and spiritual plane. The peace and clarity I found during my practice became a sanctuary, and it wasn’t long before I felt a burning desire to share this gift with others.
The catalyst for my decision was witnessing the positive impact yoga had on my own life. I felt a calling to be a source of support and guidance for others seeking solace and self-discovery through the ancient practice. The idea of facilitating a space for individuals to connect with their inner selves resonated deeply within me, and thus, the seed of becoming a yoga teacher was planted.
My Yoga Teacher Training
The next step in my journey was enrolling in a yoga teacher training program. Before doing this, I set a goal to prove to myself that I could in fact take on the challenge of a one-month intensive training. I decided to do hot yoga every day for a month, and if I succeeded, I would enrol in a 200-hour YTT program. I did succeed (thanks to my never-give-up attitude), and began the quest of finding a training. I settled on a holistic yoga training in Goa, India – where I immersed myself in 12 hours of yoga anatomy, philosophy, meditation, and different teaching styles every day for 30 days. My hot yoga experiment turned out to be adequate preparation.
The training was an intensive immersion into the philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodologies of yoga. From early morning meditation sessions to in-depth studies of asanas and pranayama techniques, every day was a profound exploration of the yogic path. The training also emphasized the importance of cultivating a compassionate and inclusive teaching style, ensuring that I could adapt my classes to meet the unique needs of each student.
My Experience of Being a Teacher
The transition from a dedicated practitioner to a yoga teacher brought forth both exhilaration and challenges. The first time I stood in front of a class, I felt a blend of nervousness and excitement. As I guided my students through the asanas, I realized the immense responsibility that comes with being a teacher—to create a space that nurtures growth, fosters self-awareness, and instils a sense of peace.
Over time, the joy of witnessing the positive transformations in my students became the driving force behind my teaching. The energy in the room when a student achieves a challenging pose or experiences a breakthrough in their practice is unparalleled. It is a testament to the power of yoga to catalyse change, not just physically, but on a holistic level.
The Lessons I’ve Learned from Being a Teacher
Being a yoga teacher has been a continuous journey of self-discovery and growth. One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the art of presence. In a world that often demands constant multitasking, teaching yoga has taught me to be fully present in the moment, both for myself and my students. It’s about creating an atmosphere of mindfulness where everyone can connect with the present, leaving behind the worries of the past and the uncertainties of the future.
Another invaluable lesson is the importance of adaptability. Each student comes to the mat with a unique body, background, and set of challenges. As a teacher, flexibility—both in the physical and mental sense—is key. Adapting my teaching style to accommodate various levels, abilities, and needs has allowed me to create a more inclusive and welcoming space. I’ve also found that being honest with my students about my personal struggles (I’m thinking of you, Scorpion Pose) truly fosters a sense of self-compassion amongst my students.
What I Recommend for Anyone Who Wants to Become a Yoga Teacher
For those considering the path of becoming a yoga teacher, I offer a few pieces of advice based on my own experience:
1. Deepen Your Practice: Before guiding others, ensure that your personal practice is strong and consistent. The depth of your own experience will enhance your ability to guide and inspire others.
2. Choose the Right Training Program: Research and select a reputable yoga teacher training program that aligns with your values and aspirations. Look for programs that cover not only the physical aspects of yoga but also delve into its philosophical and spiritual dimensions.
3. Cultivate Authenticity: Be true to yourself and cultivate authenticity in your teaching. Students appreciate genuine instructors who share their passion and vulnerabilities. Embrace your uniqueness and let it shine through in your classes.
4. Continued Learning: The journey of a yoga teacher is one of lifelong learning. Stay curious and open-minded, attending workshops, conferences, and further training to deepen your knowledge and refine your teaching skills.
5. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow teachers and practitioners. Share experiences, seek advice, and contribute to the collective growth of the yoga community.
