Over the years yoga has taken a great boost in popularity. Celebrities have begun to participate in yoga classes and many practitioners are crediting yoga classes for their new found inner peace and increased flexibility. For those who may not know, there are several different types of yoga styles that you can choose from. Each style of yoga offers a different way of performing from the poses right down to the methods of meditation. In an effort to enjoy your yoga experience, it is important to choose yoga styles that will best suit you. 

 Hatha Yoga

Named after the ancient language ofIndia, Hatha means sun and moon. The goal of this style of yoga is to unite the mind, body, and spirit by performing poses and breathing techniques during meditation. In many cases this is the type of yoga that is taught in many gyms.

Ashtanga Yoga

For those yoga enthusiasts who are looking for more of a challenge, there is Ashtanga yoga. Unlike Hatha yoga, Ashtanga yoga is much faced paced. It is an intense atmosphere that involves a lot of movement. You will be constantly changing positions and combining them with a series of breathing. This up beat yoga tends to help with flexibility and stamina.

Power Yoga

Power yoga is a more Americanized form of Ashtanga yoga. It requires a specific set of moves or poses. With these poses they combine them with three concepts; vinyasa, tristhana, and internal purification. Vinyasa includes breathing and movement. Tristhana are the three places of focus during power yoga posture, breathing, and focal points. Internal purification means to eliminate or cleanse feelings such as anger, greed, laziness, and envy.  It is important to remember that while each yoga instructor is different power yoga is not typically a class for beginners as the moves are more complex.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga or hot yoga is a style that is performed in a warm heated to 90-125 degrees. This class typically goes through 26 different asanas while in the heated room. The heat allows for your body to release all the toxins and also loosens your muscles. Bikram yoga has also helped some lose unwanted water weight. If you do not do well in heat, or are pregnant than Bikram yoga will not be the best style to choose.

Choosing the style of yoga can be fun. Try experimenting with a few styles to see which one suits your needs. If you are a beginner than you want to stay away from classes that are fast paced or that involve complex poses. If you are looking to lose weight then Bikram yoga is a style that can assist you. It is important to remember that when choosing a style of yoga to also remember to check with the instructors to find out their style of teaching, how long they have been teaching, and what their main objectives are. Being in line with what your instructor is teaching can make all the difference. Most importantly, have fun, as you discover a new way to unite your mind, body, and spirit.
